Does anyone else in your family have KC?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has family connections to KC. When our 14 year old son, Alex was diagnosed (November 2008) with KC, we were told that this can be a hereditary/genetic disease. When we started looking into this further, we could not find anyone in both families that have had this. After further testing, it looks like our younger son may have KC as well. Has anyone had more then one child with this disease? I would also be interested to hear if there was any family connections

Smiles,
Joanna

Hi Joanna,

My grandmother on my father side used to complain about vision trouble, but no one is sure what it was, I was only young when I knew her.

People who wear glasses or contact lenses are more likily to have Keratoconus as Keratoconics tend to gravitate to needing glasses or contact lenses. But its not detected, and is probably mild.

Those with astigmitisum in the family really needs to be checked out, mostly those high astigmitisum may have Keratoconus. They need a Corneal Topograhy done to know for sure.

Some families may have more chance of Keratoconus, others less, but its usually said to be in the region of one in ten who have it in familys.

Don't worry too much, as we are living in the days of Crosslinking.

Best Regards

Kane

I was diagnosed of Advanced KC in year 1996. A day after me my cousin (1st cousin) was also diagnosed with KC. My father, my cousin's father and all childern of theirs wear spectacles. But only 2 of us have KC. So i strongly believe that this issue is heriditary. Some people have long foreheads so whole family has long heads, some have broad jaws so all members have broad jaws. Mine has eyes issues so almost all have eyes issues. Mothers and wives all come from different families so none has any eye issue.

Hi Joanna I am 58 and I was diagnosed with kc at 23. I have a younger brother with another eye disease which affects retina , but my younger sister does not have any eye disease. We do not have any relatives with any type of eye disease . I have a colleague with 3 sons that only one of them is a kc patient. KC has many causes , the most believed so far I have heard may hereditary. I have 2 children , my son 31 and my daughter 26 and thanks god that they do not have any eye problem.

Best regards

We went for our follow up with our boys at the Bochner last week. Alex, who had the C3R, is doing well. No progression since the surgery. Our younger son is still doing fine. They are watching his left eye but we were told so far so good. No progressive signs of KC. We did find out that a second cousin on my husbands side has KC.

Hello Joanna,

Are you looking into any other treatments to correct Alex's vision?  My son who is 15 had crosslinking done almost a year ago now and he still can't see out of his right eye. His left eye crosslinked as well is compensating.  We tried contacts in the past however all they did was make him rub his eyes more (before the crosslinking).

I read that you went to the Bocher Eye Institute in Toronto - do you live here?  We went to the Yonge and Laser Eye Institute.

I look forward to hearing from you soon,
Charmaine
