Five year old with KC??

Hello!!  Yesterday my five year old son was diagnosed with KC.  We were shocked when our doctor said that it was progressing very quickly.  When I got home, I began doing research on KC and it seems there is a lot of controversy about a diagnosis of KC before puberty.  Obviously five is VERY young.  Has anyone heard of this or experienced KC this young?  We are getting a second opinion on Tuesday, but I would love more information... this is has been a scary couple of days for us!!  thanks so much.

Sorry to hear of your five year old sons situation.

It is very young to get KC, but there are no hard or fast rules with KC and your doing the right thing with getting a second opinion. Hopefully its not one of the corneal thinning disoders, with KC being the most common, if indeed its been diagnosed correctly.

Let us know what you find out, and hopefully its not anything thats serious, advanced or can't be treated minimally.

Megan

Hi Megan,

im so sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis, my son was 13 when he was diagnosed with KC, his optometrist said thsee is youngest KC patient was 6, so it's rare but not unheard of.

It's very wise to get a second opinion, I hope it's good news.

If it is KC it is scary at first but then treatment starts and hope returns, he will be OK.

Let us know how it goes,

Amanda

My son is 3.5 years old. He was diagnosed with PMD (which is close to KC) last week. I have been searching internet like crazy and you are the first case I came across with KC diagnosis at such young age . We are going for second opinion next week. I was wondering if you can share your experience.

Thank you

Amit

Sorry to hear about this Amit.

How did they discover this ? was it at a routine eye exam ? did they confirm with corneal Topography and thinkness tests on the cornea ?

Deb,

We went for an eye exam as my son used to watch tv with his head tilted on one side and from the corner of the eyes. Since he was so well behaved, the nurse suggested that we should also get the topography done which they usually will do for patients above 5 yrs of age. The topography showed the "kissing dove" which I am made to understand is a sign of PMD.

Its great that you have been able to catch the symptoms early...as a lot of cases where eyes are turning out are due to vision troubles not address early in life. Hopefully glass will be enough to correct the vision and if found to be KC or PMD, progression can be treated...and it can be treated.
