KC and auto-immune conditions.

I have often wondered if other people suffering from KC also have auto-immune conditions and if there is any correlation between the two.

I was diagnosed with KC in both eyes and underwent my first transplant in 2002 in my left eye.  Visually, there is a good improvement.  Just prior to my surgery I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition called Hashimotos thyroiditis which affects my thyroid.  I also have suffered from infertility.  There is a strong genetic KC link in my famly as well.  I have two siblings also with KC.  I have often wondered if there is any link betweent the KC and auto-immune condtions.

Thanks Chris, for that site.  I checked it out - that's pretty amazing.

I have asked my dr. a few times but he didn't seem to know much about the two

conditions.  I noticed someone else posted their message about KC and they also

have sjogrens syndrome(which is auto-immune).  This syndrome,

pronounced, "Show grens" is associated with dry eyes and dry salivary glands.  I often wondered about auto-immunity and KC.  ie:  There are changes to the eye in KC(obviously from some sort of attack, I suppose, whether it's antibodies or just genetically related.  I am not really versed in the genetical side or scientific side of KC.

Thanks, again, Chris.  It will be interesting to see if anyone else has autoimmune conditions and KC.  Thanks for welcoming me to the site as well! : )

Hi I really think their is a connection with auto immune disease ,as I have graves disease ,did you have graves disease at all, as I know alot of ppl have hashi  first and then have graves disease later on and then revert back to hashi again, read my post at the bottom TED is hard to deal with  as when my eyes protude out I look like someone from outer space ,and I never leave the house when I'm like this it does not happen all of the time just off and on, now with KC I'm very stressed out .

HI D Lea
Sorry 2 hear of your troubles. You might be right about the correlation between thryoid disease and KC. I did, initially have GRAVES(over-active thyroid gland).

I am currently involved in a Study, here in Australia regarding the genetics of KC.
I have submitted my BLOOD samples to a university doing a study on the DNA of KC.
I might let them know about this. They may already know.
It would be interesting to know.

I am sorry you are going through so much - my eyes never protruded. although they do becme very dry at times.
I have had a cornea transplant as well.

Is your GRAVES under control now - I think it's important for that to be addressed and then the KC or both at the same time.
I find glare hard to take too.
I wish you all the best - I will let you know if I here any outcomes with this study.
My two siblings have KC too but no thyroid disease.
If I may please ask - are you female - it seems as though thyroid disease is more prominent in females.
take care
